Grow Your List With Content Upgrades

Grow Your List With Content Upgrades

Content upgrades can help you grow your list fast. If you don’t know, a content upgrade is essentially bonus content that is laser targeted toward a specific post, page, or product when that post, page or product is also extremely specific to the audience you want to attract. The content upgrade is designed to entice subscriptions to an email list.

Examples of Content Upgrades

Let’s look at some examples of content upgrades so that you’re not confused with an add-on offer.  A content upgrade is something that is directly related to the content they’re already consuming and not something that stands alone. It’s not an eBook or another product. A content upgrade goes with the content you’re creating and wouldn’t make sense without it.

PDF of Your Popular Blog Post Series

If you have a blog post series whether you’re posting it consecutively or not, a great way to encourage downloads (and newsletter sign ups) is to offer a PDF of all the blogs in the series in one document. Require an email and name to receive it, and you’ve created a new subscriber. If a subscriber chooses to download the content upgrade you can then segment them into a new list by tagging them so that you can create messages designed just for them based on what they downloaded.

Checklist to Go With a “How to” Blog Post

This is a great example of a content upgrade too. Let’s say you created a how to blog post such as “How to Organize Your Home” then you can create a checklist for your audience to use while organizing their home so that they can take it offline with them but still remember what they read in the article.

Video Example of Post Content

What if you described an exercise in a blog post, or you posted a recipe on a blog post? You could offer a content upgrade such as a video of you going through the steps in the blog post. This is an excellent way to get more subscribers for your list as well as segment your audience who loves video from those who don’t seem to care about it.

Flash Cards to Supplement a Course

If you have a course that you teach you can upgrade the content by offering something like flash cards to go with the course. This is a great way to get people to sign up for your email list if you’ve offered the course free on your blog or you want to segment your list further by sending the offer to the people who took the course.

Content upgrades have very high conversion rates and will help you build your list or further segment your list fast. The reason is that the upgrade is very specific to the content that the viewer is already consuming which means they are highly interested. People who sign up for content upgrades are also a lot more responsive to other offers than those who sign up for email lists elsewhere.

Keep Creating Fresh Lead Magnets And Opt-In Offers

Keep Creating Fresh Lead Magnets And Opt-In Offers

No matter how well a lead magnet does today to get new members eventually the effectiveness will drop off. People go blind to offers after a while. It’s just human nature. If you’re paying attention to your stats inside your autoresponder’s dashboard, you will know that it’s happening and that will signal that it’s time to create a fresh lead magnet or opt in offer to catch new people’s eyes with something different. Developing fresh freebies will energize you and your audience.

  • Get People Talking – When you create a freebie you should have an ultimate reason for creating it such as moving people toward buying something specific from you. The freebie should get not only your current list members talking, but it should create buzz all around the internet so that everyone in your audience wants that freebie before it’s too late.
  • Educates Your Audience – A freebie can do more than solving one problem for your ideal audience, it can also educate them about your business in terms of the kind of quality your products have. When all your products, free or not, are well made and valuable it helps them know you’re someone safe to buy from.
  • Creates a Sticky Environment – If your email list members know that you may be giving away more freebies throughout their time on your list then they’re more likely to stay on the list and open the messages that you send so that they don’t miss out on a freebie. The longer you can get list members to stick around the more likely they are to convert to customers at some point.
  • Creates Positive Brand Knowledge – Every freebie you create is another opportunity to pass along information about your brand. The more you can do that the more your brand will become recognized by everyone including your list members as a positive entity that they want to engage with. Plus, since your freebies are created with the same love and care that your paid products are they know what to expect from you.
  • Encourages Converting – When your freebies are high quality and truly answer a problem for your audience it encourages them to want to buy what you’re offering. The reason is once they go through the process of getting the freebie it becomes easier to go through that process again but this time to check out with their credit card.
  • Makes Customers Happy – Freebies make people happy. The more content you can give your audience for free, the happier they’re going to be. The more positive they’ll portray you to others, and the more likely they are to be satisfied as paying customers and buy more from you.

Freebies are a great way to not only attract new list members, but they can also revitalize your current list members. When they see something new and different it will inspire them toward acting and converting. Anytime your list becomes inactive and non-responsive you should be launching a new freebie of some kind such as a live event, webinar, report, checklist or something that will get them talking and acting.

Leverage Your Subscribers To Grow Your Lists

Leverage Your Subscribers To Grow Your Lists

As the saying goes, “Birds of a feather, flock together”. Therefore, the best source of active list members are friends of people who are already list members. Knowing this, it will be important to leverage your subscribers to help you grow your list. Let’s look at a few ways to help your subscribers, help you, grow your list.

  • Testimonials – Ask subscribers to provide testimonials that you can put on your website, especially the landing page for your newsletter or email list. That way, people see that their friends are subscribed and love the information they receive, which will encourage them to sign up too.
  • Referrals – Occasionally you can involve your subscribers in a subscriber drive to help you get more list members. Ask subscribers to share your email list with all their friends and family. You can even give them an affiliate link that will enable them to earn off their referrals’ purchases.
  • Sharing – Don’t discourage anyone from sharing your freebies or emails. In fact, ask them to share them. When you do that, you’re going to get even more people to sign up for your email list because you’ll be viewed as generous with your time and knowledge. When a message is good enough to share, rejoice.
  • Cross Promote – When you create many of your email list messages, you can share the entire message with social media. For example, Aweber.com will host the message online so that you can share that link with your social media networks. Each share will also give them the opportunity to sign up for your email list.
  • CTAs – Each piece of content that you create should always have a CTA of some kind. If you ensure that you do that it won’t matter where your messages go or who shares them. If someone wants to subscribe or buy something they can base on that one message that was shared.
  • Lead Magnets – No matter what people will share your lead magnets with others without telling them to sign up for your list to get it. Don’t try to stop it. In fact, encourage readers of your lead magnets to share them with others. Simply include information about opting into your email list within the lead magnet so that when your subscribers share, anyone with your lead magnet can sign up for your email list or answer other CTAs such as purchasing your products.
  • Incentivize Them – Subscribers who engage with you already like you. All you need to do is give them a slight push to encourage them to share your messages, emails, and opt-in offers with their friends and family by asking them to share and praising them for doing so. You can even enroll buyers automatically into an affiliate program so that when they promote even your free items it will trigger them to collect affiliate earnings if the person buys something.
  • Advertise – Using your email list, you can create look-a-like audiences on Facebook Ads, helping you leverage your existing audience to get more. You can also set up Facebook to target friends and family of your current subscribers to get even more subscribers.

Leveraging your list of subscribers to get more subscribers is one of the best ways to build your list because most people who are friends like the same types of things. While not all of their friends will be your ideal audience, enough of them will be and it is worth it to take the extra effort to attract them.

Mix It Up – Give Them Multiple Places To Subscribe

Mix It Up – Give Them Multiple Places To Subscribe

The way people get on your list is to sign up for it using a sign-up form. You may have the sign-up form connected to a freebie, a landing page, or social media (or elsewhere) but this is how they get on the list.

A sign-up form is code you will get from your autoresponder service such as Aweber.com, Drip.com, or Convertkit.com (and others) that you paste into a page, or integrate with landing page software such as Leadpages.net, Converzly.com, or Instapage.com (and others) so that your audience member can subscribe to your list.

If you want to get more subscribers for your list converting a larger percentage of people you contact to subscribers then you need to provide multiple opportunities for them to sign up. Don’t just offer one way, offer multiple ways on your website, and other platforms to get your audience on your list.

  • Pop Ups – This is a type of sign up form that is set to “pop up” for the viewer based on their behavior. For example, some pop ups are designed to show up within seconds of a new viewer going to the page. Others are set to only pop up when the viewer is leaving the page without taking any action. While some people complain about pop ups statistics don’t lie, and they still work for most audiences.
  • Landing Pages – For each give away you should create a sales page anyway. This will enable you to promote the benefits of signing up for your email list just as you would a paid product. Your email list is just as valuable as a paid product so it should get the same treatment with a great landing page or sales page devoted to your sign-up form for your newsletter or email list.
  • Within Content – An often-overlooked place to put a sign-up form is within the content of your website. It’s always a good idea to write a blog post about your newsletter or make a sales page about it, but this is different. This type is mentioned within the content to help people know that they can sign up to get more information or get reminded of more great content. It often shows up right below content as well.
  • Side Bar Option – If you have a side bar on your website, you may as well put a sign-up form there too. When a visitor is interested in more they will often look at the side bar when you have one for more places to get more content. The email list signup form being there helps grab those extra members.
  • Featured Area – Every website has a “featured” area which is “above the fold”. A sign-up form there that stays there always whether you have a giveaway right now or not is a good way to display a sign-up form. Plus, a sign-up form in the featured area will get more attention than other areas.
  • Slides – These types of forms can be set up to slide up on the bottom right of the page your viewer is reading. You can trigger it to slide into view based on the visitor’s behavior or after a certain amount of time. It doesn’t obscure any of the content but it shows up enough to help your audience notice the sign-up form and the benefits of signing up.
  • Overlays – This is slightly different from a pop up in that it comes up and covers up the content on the page after a few seconds, or after an action is taken to trigger the form to appear. The form doesn’t just pop up, but the content on the website becomes obscured in some way by the overlay drawing extra attention to the sign-up form.
  • Splash Page – This is a page that viewers see before they see your actual website. You can make it a requirement for people to sign up to read the rest of the content, or you can just put the splash page portion above the “fold” which is the area people can see on a PC before they scroll down the page. This part can tell all about the benefits of subscribing and gets the viewers’ attention immediately.

However, many places you place a sign-up form, remember that each type looks different on mobile than on a PC. Plus, remember that with few exceptions most people use their mobile devices to check email. Therefore, it’s imperative that you ensure your forms look good and work for mobile as well as they do on a PC.
